Rodger Kingston

Kingston has been building his Forgotten Photographs Collection since the early 1970s. He is an active photographer and fine Cibachrome printer, and is the author of several books and numerous articles, most notably Walker Evans In Print: An Illustrated Bibliography (1995). He taught photographic history for nearly a decade at Boston art schools. A photo dealer and gallery owner in the mid 70s, he began collecting the anonymous images that nobody else was interested in, from mammoth plate landscapes to snapshots and Carte de Visites; his collection now numbers well over 3000 images. The collection is represented by Index Stock Imagery, New York, NY.
In his own photographs as well as in his collection Kingston has always been interested in the power and vitality of the vernacular; he has been called a "Connoisseur of the Commonplace." In his PhotoHistory XI presentation he will discuss the need for an alternative history of photography that examines the democratic nature of the medium and the contribution of the masses of "forgotten" photographers who have moved photography forward from its very beginnings.
